Maintenance oil vs hardwax oil: what’s the difference?
They sound similar and both involve oil, but they do different jobs. Here’s the plain difference, and which one you actually need for looking after an oiled floor at home.
Maintenance oil is a top-up you can do yourself: it refreshes an already oiled floor without sanding. Hardwax oil is the base finish a floor is coated with, usually as part of a professional sand-and-finish. For routine care at home, maintenance oil is the one you reach for; hardwax oil is a job for a recoat.

Maintenance oil is the top-up. It refreshes a floor that’s already oiled, feeding the surface and evening out the busy areas, without sanding or recoating the whole floor.
When to use which
For everyday care at home, maintenance oil is the one you reach for. When an oiled floor starts to look dry or worn in the high-traffic zones, a maintenance-oil top-up brings it back. Hardwax oil comes in when a floor is being finished or fully recoated, which is a bigger job and usually one for a professional.
