Re-oiling your floor? Hire the floor machine

What a litre of clean actually costs
You can buy the cleaner as a concentrate and mix it at home, or buy it ready-to-use. Here is the honest maths on both, from our shelf prices.
FirstFloor Wood Floor Cleaner Concentrate
$49 a 1L bottle
One 1L bottle makes up to 40 litres of cleaning solution (mix 25ml per litre of water).
About $1.20 a made-up litre
A ready-to-use 1L spray
$27 to $28 a litre
Already mixed, grab and go. Handy for a quick clean or a smaller floor.
About $27 to $28 a litre
Same cleaner, mixed at home. Prices are our current shelf prices, and the per-litre figure uses the concentrate's own stated dilution (1L makes 40 litres).
An oiled floor is topped up, not stripped back. You clean it with a pH-neutral cleaner made for oiled wood, and every so often you feed the surface with maintenance oil to keep it looking matte and even. Here’s the range for oiled floors, own-brand first.
Before you buy: how to look after an oiled floor
Two jobs, different rhythms. Day to day, clean with a well-wrung mop and an oiled-floor cleaner. Skip anything harsh or high-alkaline, and skip steam mops, which force water and heat into the timber. Then every so often, when the floor starts to look dry or patchy in the busy spots, you top it up with maintenance oil rather than recoating the whole thing. Most homes re-oil high-traffic areas once or twice a year and give the whole floor a professional re-oil every 5 to 10 years, depending on wear.
